When dealing with an angry customer, it can be helpful to listen to their frustrations, show empathy, and ask how you can make things right.

As a retail associate, you will be responsible for processing transactions.

Workplace bullying and harassment describes a wide range of negative behaviors, including physical, verbal, and psychological mistreatment by one or others in the workplace.

We deserve to feel safe, comfortable, and at ease in our working environment.

Acts of bullying can include malicious comments and gossip, forcing someone to work overtime or blocking promotions; hazing, where you are made to do something humiliating or inappropriate to be accepted; or even physical violence.

When someone is being bullied, it makes it difficult to focus on daily tasks. A victim may feel scared, depressed, and it can even affect life outside of work too.

In a company where bullying flourishes, it can lead to high employment turnover and decreased trust, which leads to reduced productivity.

Here are some measures you can put in place to ensure your workplace is free of bullying and harassment: Encourage employees to act towards each other in a respectful and professional manner, make it clear in your company handbook that bullying is not tolerated, train management to spot and stop bullying, ensure there are confidential processes for reporting bad behavior, make a commitment to support bullied employees.

If you are being bullied, document everything that happens, check your workplace bullying policy and make a complaint. If an employee reports the issue of bullying, investigate and stop the behavior.

Eradicate bullying so that everybody can feel safe and successful at work.

[Narrator] It isn’t always easy to spot ageism.

Like many other isms, ageism can sabotage, diversity, equity, and inclusion when we aren’t looking for it.

So what does ageism look like? Actions like excluding somebody based on presumed technical skill.

[Employee 1]”You can send a slide deck to me. I’m not sure if is all that good at PowerPoint.”

[Narrator] Only going to lunch with coworkers from the same age group as you. Or informing a hiring decision by guessing a job candidate’s age.

[Employee 2] How old are your kids? So when did you graduate?

[Narrator] All of us have our preconceived notions about age. Like any kind of bias, ageism is best-confronted head-on. So where do we start?

Examine your own feelings towards age and work to unlearn biases. Spend time getting to know people in different age groups.

[Employee 3] “Want to check out the new coffee shop with me?”

[Narrator] Talk about ageism with your colleagues and partner with leadership to combat ageism at work. By spotting and stopping ageism, we can create a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all.

Video Transcription: Four Ways to Respect Ramadan in the Workplace

Here are four ways to respect Ramadan in the workplace.

Assume you have coworkers who are fasting, fasting as a practice meant to be integrated with everyday life. This makes fasting less apparent to others, but it’s probably still present at your workplace. 24% of the global population is Muslim and as many as 93% of Muslims fast during Ramadan.

No matter where you live or work, it’s safe to assume you have coworkers observing Ramadan. Understand the schedule of Ramadan. Ramadan is often an extraordinarily busy and exhausting month for those who practice it. It’s the holiest month of the year. So many double down on spiritual activities like charity, volunteerism, prayer, and religious study.

The typical day starts before dawn to eat and pray, followed by a regular day of school or work while fasting after many had to gather to break the fast. Also known as Iftar, a single household may be cooking and hosting several major feasts over the course of the month after breaking the fast.

Many head to the mosque for additional prayer in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, the holiest time of the year. This schedule will further intensify with late or all-night prayer and study. Be conscientious of physical activity.

Most employees who are Muslim will continue to work as normal despite the hectic schedule. If your team’s work involves physical exertion, consider finding proactive accommodations for employees who may be suffering, sleep deprivation, low blood sugar, and exhaustion as part of their religious practice.

Promote a Ramadan-friendly schedule, asking team members to arrive early or stay late has a disproportionate impact on Muslim employees during Ramadan, when scheduling meetings and sharing work, try to honor the standard workday during Ramadan. Ask team members when they prefer to meet.

For many Muslims, the early afternoons are ideal during the month of Ramadan. Avoid scheduling activities that center around food like brown board meetings or potlucks that would challenge and ostracize those who fast.
